E Hugh Pope House
Here's what I know:
The house was owned by E.G. Pope, Sr. It was appraised by E.Hugh Pope. It was built in 1920. It was in poor condition in the 1980's, but was refurbished sometime between 1980-1999 by the original owner's son, and sold to the poeple who owned it before we did. A brick house next door was built and owned by the same family. It was a sort-of mother-in-law cottage. I believe it was E.G. Pope who planted the roses and had them cultivated by Witherspoon Rose Culture.
There are some stories in the neighborhood about some things that happened here. One of those things is that a truck came around the corner too fast, plowed across the lawn into the porch and dining room. They had to be entirely rebuilt.
A mystery in the yard is a cement slab that seems to have glass and oyster shells imbedded in it. This slab is partly buried under the root of a pecan tree.
We bought the property in 1999, and started the process of remodeling, reparing, and redecorating. We had a drainage system installed in the crawlspace. We had the kitchen remodeled. My brother's construction company (T-built Construction and Design) installed a new back-yard dog fence, installed 19 new windows, rebuilt the front porch, renovated and tiled the downstairs bathroom, redecorated the dining room, rebuilt the upstairs hall ceiling, and did several odd jobs around the house. We put on a new roof, installed a new HVAC system, and put new plantings in the yard.
Across Colonial Street is located Geer Cemetery, dated 1877-1944. More on that later. Geer Cemetery has it's own website: http://apdew.com/FOGC/
