Today and Tomorrow

Reading the story of the couple's excitement with their first house reminded me when my husband and I lived in our first apartment.  It was at 802 St. Mary's Street then known as the Ligon Building . Dr. Ligon, a dentist owned it and had his practice on the first floor.  We lived in one of two apartments over the dental office.  We  loved it !

The apartment was all new with nice roll out windows, new tile floors and baseboard electric heat and it was affordable.  We bought our first furniture.  We bought a wrought iron sofa and chair (all the style at the time), a coffee table AND a TV set.  It was a Zenith with legs which lasted twenty years.

We had fun like only young people can.  Once we went to the State Fair and it poured rain. There were no cement walks at the fair grounds at that time  so we were up to our ankles in mud.  We enjoyed it none the less.  I'm certain we both  still  remember it.   We played Canasta which was in vogue at the time.. We ate our first Chinese at the new Raleigh "Oriental" restaurant.  We went to the beaches and to the mountains.  We enjoyed everyday, work and play.

We lived in the apartment two or three years.  After three years we purchased our own house and moved from our "Camelot"  apartment.   We did not know those were to be our happiest times spent together.  Not many years hence we would be getting a divorce.
