Parkwood's Original Purpose

The Research Triangle Park began in the 1950's with names like IBM, GE, Nortel, Burroughs-Wellcome, Glaxo, and several Government Agencies, such as the EPA and NIEHS.  From this a planned subdivision was needed and would be located about 1 mile west of NC 54 (know then as Nelson-Chapel Hill Hwy) and NC 55 (know as Apex Hwy).  The subdivisions purpose was to give the employees of the RTP a place to live that would be a close commute to work.  During the 50's, Southern  Durham County, was either farm or woodlands. Hence, Parkwood came to life!  Parkwood is a planned community, with single family homes, townhouses, apartments, a  central shopping center, an elementary school and public library.  One hundred acres was set aside for greenways and parks.

The residents of this community formed one of the first homeowners associations in North Carolina on September 25th, 1960.  www.parkwoodnc.org
