Lilly
We were the first owners of this home. FYI, this is where I grew up and this is my first memory.
You know the basement was the big playroom when we were kids. That was our, and all the neighborhood kids', space from 1961 to 1983 and in the later 60s a lady would come and help keep the house. I was told to call her Ms. Lilly.
I was very young and would walk out of the sliding glass doors that someone would have to open for me and would squat down in the yard and pick dandelions. That is the first flower I remember because you could hold it to your cheek and if it showed yellow on your jaw, then that meant you liked butter. And I loved butter!
Whenever they were in the yard, I would pick Ms. Lilly a handful and bring them to her to thank her for coming over to visit with us and helping out. And she indeed appreciated them. I remember how nice she was.
When it was time for her to go home, we would drive her back to Durham. As Green Oak drive was rural at the time, I remember the differences in the city in seeing so many houses close together and people walking down the street. Of course back then, I just stood up on the front seat between her and Daddy. I remember there were lots of turns to go to her home. There were police and army men standing near sawhorses on streets that we couldn't drive down. I remember that I always wanted to go to her house like she came to visit us. But finally, we would pull over at one of the sawhorses and she would get out to walk home. Most days there would be police cars there with flashing lights. They all told me that we couldn't go to her house. That the walk was too far for me.
I turned four in 1968.
