The Letter L
Whoever is living there now is probably asked why the letter L is on the chimney. I was asked this too when I lived there. I was the second occupant of the home built back in the '50s.
I bought the home from Mrs. Ligion about 4 months before she passed away. She moved to a nursing home and lived there about a year. This was my first home. And, of course, the letter L is for her last name. She and her husband built the house.
I went under contract with my first home Christmas day of 1990. I had recently relocated to this area and was renting a room from a friend at Palm Park Apartments on Leon. Though I was ready to have my own place it was awhile before I moved in.
When I would go over to the house, though it was vacant, I never felt like it was mine. I found a few incidentals articles that she had left behind. And when spring came, I could see how well she had loved the yard. There wasn't much symetry to the plantings (a bush stuck here and bulbs stuck there) but I could tell that she would much rather be there on Duke Homestead. I would go over and renovate but always knew it was still her home. Later in the spring of 1991, she passed away. After about a week, I felt like it was okay to move in. After removing 52 stumps from the yard, it begin to feel like home.
